Deck staining in Denver, before the boards give up.
Colorado sun grays wood and freeze-thaw splits it. Cleaning, brightening and sealing on schedule is maintenance. Waiting turns it into carpentry.

The short answer
Denver Paint Contractors provides deck staining, fence staining and exterior wood refinishing across Denver and the Front Range. How to tell your deck needs attention now
Pour a cup of water on the boards. If it soaks in instead of beading, the seal is gone and the wood is drinking every storm.
Water soaks in instead of beading
The clearest sign the finish has failed and the wood is absorbing moisture.
Gray, dull boards
UV has broken down the surface fibers. Brightening restores tone before stain goes on.
Splinters and raised grain
Dry, weathered wood roughens up. Sanding makes it safe for bare feet again.
Cracking or cupping
Repeated wet and dry cycles distort boards. Sealing slows it down significantly.
Stain peeling in sheets
A film-forming product failed, usually from moisture underneath or poor prep. It has to come off.
Green or black patches
Shaded, damp areas and sprinkler spray grow mildew and algae that need cleaning, not covering.

How a deck or fence project runs
Estimate and inspection
We measure deck surface, railings and fence runs, check the wood condition and flag any repairs needed first.
Clean and brighten
Appropriate cleaners remove dirt, mildew and failing finish, then a brightener restores tone and opens the grain.
Dry time
Wood has to dry to the product's requirement. Staining damp wood is the fastest way to a peeling deck.
Sand and prep
Rough areas and raised grain sanded, fasteners set, and surrounding surfaces protected.
Stain application
Applied evenly, worked into the grain, with transitions planned so there are no lap lines across boards.
Pricing, plainly
What deck staining costs in Denver
Deck and fence staining is priced by surface area, railing linear footage and the condition of the wood. A deck that has been maintained costs far less than one that has gone four years without a finish.
| What moves the price | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Deck square footage | The walking surface is the base measurement, with stairs counted separately. |
| Railing and spindle count | Railings are detail work and often take as long as the deck surface itself. |
| Current condition | Gray, mildewed or peeling wood needs far more cleaning, brightening and sanding. |
| Stain type | Transparent, semi-transparent and solid stains differ in cost, appearance and maintenance cycle. |
| Repairs | Loose boards, popped fasteners and rotted sections handled before staining. |
| Fencing included | Privacy fence runs add significant linear footage and are usually priced per section. |
Stain while the crew is already there
If you are repainting the exterior this year, adding the deck and fence to the same visit means one setup and one mobilization. Ask for both priced together and separately so you can see the difference.

Questions, answered
Deck and fence staining questions
How often should a deck be stained in Colorado?
It depends on exposure, the product used and how much sun and snow the deck takes. Test with water: when it stops beading and starts soaking in, it is time. South and west-facing decks need attention sooner.
What is the best time of year to stain a deck in Denver?
Spring and early fall are usually ideal because moderate temperatures let stain absorb properly. The wood must be dry, and staining in the hottest part of a summer day can cause blotchy results.
Why did my deck stain peel?
Peeling usually means moisture was trapped underneath, the wood was not clean or dry enough, or a film-forming product was applied over a surface that could not hold it. We identify the cause before recommending a fix.
Can you stain a brand-new deck?
Often, but new pressure-treated lumber may need to weather and dry first. We check moisture and follow the stain manufacturer's guidance rather than guessing.
Transparent, semi-transparent or solid stain?
Transparent shows the most grain and needs refreshing soonest. Semi-transparent balances grain and protection. Solid hides grain, lasts longest in appearance, but is the hardest to reverse later. We walk through the trade-offs at the estimate.
Do you stain fences and pergolas too?
Yes. Privacy fences, railings, pergolas, gates and planters are all commonly stained to match the deck.
Can you repair boards before staining?
We flag loose boards, popped fasteners and rot. Minor fixes are handled as part of the project and larger structural repairs get quoted or referred so the stain goes onto sound wood.
Does the 25% off apply to deck staining?
Yes. The October offer applies to the labor portion of deck and fence staining projects booked by October 31, 2026.
